Wading the Tangle River. Getting any club going is a tough go, but starting a women's fly fishing club is especially difficult. Women don't have the free time men do. If a guy comes home and tells his wife he is going fishing in Montana, that's just fine. Reverse the rolls and all bedlam breaks out! There is the cooking, cleaning, kids to care for and much more that the ladies have to do before they can consider fishing. So you must be careful in what you offer so a women can feel confortable deciding to get involved in this type of activity remembering her time is limited.

I would recommend that you sure get to know the local fly shops and even see if you can come in on a Saturday and greet folks. Maybe set up a small table with flyers about women in flyfishing and your ideas about a club. I put on a fly casting afternoon and did a flyer to hand out to everyone, men and women. You would be surprised at the amount of women who do fly fish a little that have their husbands do their flyfishing shopping because they are too intimidated to go into the shops themselves. Thus men will be very interested in a forum for women to learn more about the sport.

Our club is one year old and we are doing pretty darn good. We do also allow men in our club and have several who are very active. Keeping up with activities is also very hard. I have had a good relationship with the fly shops and they have assisted by putting on fishing events for our club members at a discounted price. I try to let the fly shops know that our members will surely patronize their shop especially if they are promoting the club. We also have fly tying once a week and that has become very popular. Do have lots of hands on events, actual fishing, casting lessons ect..

We now have shirts with our logo to advertise our club and business cards to hand out to potential new members. We have our own web site and email address so if you are looking for this form of a club, here we are.

I hope these few suggestions will assist you, and always be ready to promote! promote! promote! your club! No matter where you are!!!

Sincerely,
Nancy Siegler
